Designation:
“Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita” (DOCG) represents the highest classification level for Italian wines, with stricter regulations compared to DOC, ensuring superior quality.
Montecucco Sangiovese obtained DOCG status in 2011.
Grape Variety:
This designation applies specifically to red wines primarily made from Sangiovese grapes, which must constitute at least 90% of the blend.
The remaining grapes can be other local red varieties, up to a maximum of 10%.
Production Area:
The production area for Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG is the same as Montecucco DOC. However, DOCG wines often come from the finest vineyard parcels, where conditions are ideal for growing Sangiovese.
Requirements:
There are stricter criteria regarding production techniques, maximum yield per hectare, higher minimum alcohol content, and extended aging periods, including a mandatory maturation in wooden barrels that enhances the wine’s complexity and longevity.
